Residents in Churchgate Street could soon have new planning rules to help protect the area's historic character.

Churchgate Street, known for its architectural and historic interest, has been a conservation area since 1969.

To safeguard the area's buildings and features, the council is considering new stringent guidelines.

Harlow Council is inviting the residents to provide their opinions on the proposed changes.

Harlow Council's planning portfolio holder, Cllr Alastair Gunn, said: "As part of Harlow Council’s priority to renew our neighbourhoods, we are looking at ways to go further in preserving Churchgate Street’s unique history, its character and original features."

The document under consultation includes an appraisal of the area's character and presents three key management proposals involving slight boundary amendments to the Conservation Area, a guidance document, and the introduction of an Article 4 direction demanding planning permission for specific house works.

Cllr Gunn added: "The proposed changes mean that homeowners in Churchgate Street would have to apply for planning permission to make certain changes to their home.

"The introduction of a management plan and guidance document would assist residents with submitting planning applications for works covered by the Article 4 direction.

"I would urge Churchgate Street residents wanting to play their part in preserving the character of their area to let us know whether they support these proposals.

"Their feedback to this consultation can help us ensure we get protecting the conservation area right for the future."

Council letters are scheduled for delivery to all residents of Churchgate Street to inform them about the consultation.

For those who wish to review the document, it is available online and can be physically seen at Harlow Central Library, Old Harlow Library, and the Civic Centre during regular working hours.

Residents who have difficulty accessing the document are advised to reach out to the council.

Feedback to this consultation can be provided through the council’s website, myharlow@harlow.gov.uk, or by post to Forward Planning, Harlow Council, Civic Centre, Water Gardens, Harlow, CM20 1WG.

The council have warned that they may disregard feedback received after the consultation closure at 5pm on Monday, September 30.
