A rare picture of a police box being installed in Chingford at the bottom of Friday Hill outside Poulter’s Dairy c1938.

An extended, force wide, police telephone box system was brought into service from the mid-1930s.

The blue boxes were mainly sited at major junctions in Chingford, each being connected to Walthamstow station by private lines.

The boxes continued to play an important role in police work until the late 1960s to early 1970s, when they were phased out following the introduction of personal radios.
