Epping Forest District Council fears a new scam is targeting older residents by claiming they work for the council and asking people to work inside their homes for payments.
The council have received reports of people in North Weald who have been approached- the scammers have returned to certain households to claim more money.
Impersonation scam cases, in which criminals impersonate trusted organisations to trick victims almost doubled to 39,364 cases since the pandemic- the largest increase of all scam types according to UK Finance.
Epping Forest District Council (EFDC) reassures residents that work will be done by appointment only.
Staff will carry and show ID upon arrival and no payment will be asked for by the person doing the work.
Payment is made via an automated system or arranged with the resident to pay at the Civic Offices in Epping
It applies to repairs to council housing, which are carried out by Qualis Management or an approved contractor.
EFDC have issued tips on what to do if the scammers attempt to enter homes:
- Do not let them in to your home.
- Call the police
- Or confirm the visit with our Customer Contact Centre on 01992 564000
