Almost 100 students at West Hatch High School, Chigwell, have put their baking skills to the test by taking part in the 'Great West Hatch Bake Off'.

Following the start of the latest Covid-19 'lockdown', the school wanted to continue with the competitive ethos between its 'Houses' and provide pupils with some fun tasks away from normal lessons, whilst providing them with opportunities to earn 'House' points for rewards when they return to school.

Students came up with creative tasty treats at home and sent in pictures of their baking results.

After a week of baking the competition resulted in a tie between Austen House and Brunel House.

Following the success of the 'Bake Off', the school is now holding weekly house competitions with students now embarking on the second challenge - 'Art Attack'.

Tom McGarr, PE teacher and student wellbeing co-ordinator, said “It is great to see so many students and staff get involved with competitive challenges to demonstrate the pride that everyone has for their respective Houses.

"The hope is that the competitions will bring families together at the same time, whilst also enabling students to learn about different coping strategies through difficult times.

"Other competitions to come will see exercise, science, cooking and many more skills developed.”
