Gerald Goddard Died peacefully at home on 16th February. He spent his entire teaching career in Waltham Forest. Following National Service he taught for six years at the newly built Heathcote Secondary School on the developing Friday Hill Estate. In 1957 he was appointed Head of Religious Studies at the William Morris Technical School where he remained until 1984. In addition to his teaching he devoted a great deal of energy to improving the standard of Athletics at William Morris and more widely in the Borough serving as Chairman of Schools' Athletic (Secondary) Association, first in Walthamstow and later Waltham Forest, for 25 years. On two occasions he organised the Essex Schools A.A. Cross Country Championships and later took the Essex Race Walking team to the National Championships on the Isle of Man. For these activities he was appointed a Vice President of the Essex Schools Association. After his retirement in 1985 he devoted himself to horticulture in which he always had a major interest. He gave great support to the Chingford Horticultural Society and to the newly formed conservation body "Plant Heritage" which aims to maintain the viability of various plant groups, known as National Collections of which he had one. For many years he had oversight of similar collections in the London area. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday 21st March at 10:45am at All Saints Church, Chingford.
